The spanish professional footballer Xavier “Xavi” Hernández is celebrating his birthday today. Xavi, born 25 January 1980, is the first player in Barcelona’s history to play 150 international matches.
Xavi, born in the neighbouring city of Terrassa, joined Barca’s famous La Masia academy as an 11-year-old and made his debut for the first-team seven years later in a friendly against Southampton in May, 1998. He made his competitive bow in August that year, scoring in the Super Cup final defeat against Mallorca. 20 years later he has 28 trophies, only surpassed by Andrés Iniesta as the most successful Spanish player in history.
On 21 May 2015, Xavi announced that he would join Qatari club Al Sadd at the end of the season, on a three-year contract. According to his agent, the deal would involve him becoming an ambassador for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the country, and also start his coaching qualifications.
